# How to read this book

## Who it is for

**You want to start.** Start from a person to help and a problem you can see, at work or elsewhere.

**You already build.** Pick one move to sharpen, or a difficulty that keeps coming back.

**You are growing a team.** Choose a practice together and the conditions to try it. The ⇄ cards are for you.

**You back other builders.** Ask what would let someone try something this month.

The [four paths](/paths/) give three cards and a first attempt for each.

## Choosing a card

A card carries one idea and reads in a few minutes. Pick it from a path, from the contents, or let the [builder test](/builder-test/) suggest one.

Read the scene first. Keep what fits your situation, change what does not. Cards marked ⇄ are about the conditions of the work: time, access, decisions, recognition.

## In what order

Any order. The ten capabilities suggest a route, but one real attempt usually touches several.

Mariam sees her aunt answer the same stock question all day. She watches, builds a shared list with an AI in an hour, sends it to ten customers, and counts the questions for a week. Curiosity, understanding, delivery, checking and passing on, in one attempt. The full case is in [A useful first attempt](/first-try/).

## Moving to an attempt

**Alone.** Build the smallest version, show it, and look at what it changed.

**With a peer.** Show a real piece of work and ask for feedback on one question.

**As a team.** Put a card next to a recent fact, agree an attempt, an owner and a date. The [session format](/workshop/) gives you a thirty-minute outline.

**With someone you are supporting.** Read a card on a real case together and let them propose the next move.

## Full cases and templates

Three examples show the move from card to practice: [a first attempt with no job and no team](/first-try/), [an improvement with a decision and a handover](/improving-without-starting-over/), and [six weeks of team learning](/learning-as-a-team/). The [templates](/templates/) help you prepare and review your own.

## The cards

Every card is a principle, numbered within its capability: Principle 01, Principle 02. It names a common reflex and the builder's move that replaces it.

Cards marked ⇄, and "Leader" in their header, are for the people who run the work. They are about the conditions those people set: time, access, priorities, rules, recognition.

### What every card gives you

1. A situation you recognise.
2. An idea you can follow.
3. A move you can make.
4. What to look at afterwards.
5. A question to discuss with others.

## Where the examples come from

The scenes are constructed to illustrate a line of reasoning. Unless a source is named, their people and numbers are invented; do not cite them as case studies. A first-person account is the author's experience. The [reading list](/already-written/) gives the texts the book draws on.

## The imported words

**Builder** means a person who sets out to improve a concrete situation and learns from what they observe. It is neither a title nor a rank.

**Product** means the work of choosing which needs to serve and checking the results. It does not require a product manager role.

**Ownership** means answering for a result and what follows it, until someone else takes it over.

**Reference** means what other people can learn from and reuse: a method explained, an example, a resource. Published, it helps everyone with the same problem.

To choose a first card, start with the [four paths](/paths/).
