Curiosity is billable

The reflex

“I’ll look at how it works once I’m done with the rest.”

The question comes back every week. Nobody takes the time to look at why.

The builder’s reflex

“I’m taking thirty minutes to follow one refund from start to finish. Then we’ll see whether it’s worth digging further.”

Why

Whatever you don’t understand in your work, you pay for every time: the same answer given ten times, an estimate made blind, a problem worked around without being seen.

Support answers the same customer for the third time. Nobody has followed what happens between the refund request and the money arriving. Product assumes a bank delay. Finance assumes support checks. Following one case end to end is enough: an approval has been sitting in a shared inbox for two weeks.

Thirty minutes of curiosity saved hours of repeated answers. That is why it is billable. The inquiry does not have to become a rebuild: it stops once it has named the wait and the person who can clear it.

The same move works everywhere: a job application that drags, an invoice that keeps bouncing back, a delivery that always fails on Fridays. No access? Ask someone to show you. Twenty minutes of guided tour beat a week of guessing.

Try this

Take a step in your work that you use without understanding it. Write the question down before you start looking: “Who confirms the money has arrived?” beats “understand the whole billing system”.

Give yourself thirty minutes. At the end, write down what you understood, what is still unclear, and who can answer. Share it with the people who ask the same question you did.

Next time it comes up, see whether you answer faster or better. If not, your question was too wide: narrow it.

To discuss

Which question comes back every week here without anyone having followed it?

Your notes

Only you read them.
