Understanding cannot be delegated

The reflex

You hand the building over to competent people. When it is time to decide, you see neither the dependencies, nor the risks, nor the options.

The builder’s reflex

Ask for enough explanation to decide with your eyes open. Not to become a specialist.

Why

Delegate the work, yes. Delegate the understanding, no. If you decide without understanding, you are not deciding: you are signing what you are shown.

A team is thinking of changing payment provider. The price is lower. But the switch also touches which payment methods are accepted, reconciliation, and refunds. An hour walking the flow with the person who knows it brings those dependencies out before you sign.

Do not check every estimate: ask what it covers, what it rests on, and what could move it. An AI can explain the vocabulary before the walk-through, so the hour goes to the real questions.

This holds at every level. Someone preparing an offer has to understand how an order becomes a delivery.

Try this

Ask someone who knows a flow to walk you through it. Start from a real decision:

“From the need to the service delivered, which steps matter for this decision? Where are the dependencies and the unknowns?”

Say the flow back in your own words and have the errors corrected. Then pick one consequence for your decision.

To discuss

Which decision are we about to sign without having walked the flow it touches?

Your notes

Only you read them.
