Let them carry what is reversible

The starting point

Someone could take a decision on a subject you carry. You keep deciding, because it is faster.

The move

Hand them the decisions that can be undone, with clear limits and your help available.

Why it works

People learn to decide by deciding. As long as you keep every decision, the other person learns to wait. Start with what can be undone: a mistake will cost little, and the learning a lot.

A reversible decision still has effects: a sent message stays sent. Look at what would remain if the decision were wrong.

A colleague sets the running order of a kick-off meeting with a customer. She decides the order and the content; the price and the date stay fixed. You plan one preparation check-in. She really decides, inside a clear frame.

Do not take back a decision you handed over because you would have preferred another option. Step in for a real risk. Otherwise, next time, she will ask you first.

Try this

Choose a decision that can be undone and that you still take yourself. Hand it over, with the goal, the limits, and the moment you will look at it together.

Say in advance what would justify you stepping in.

At that point, look at the reasoning and the result, without taking back control. Widen the frame next time.

To discuss

Which reversible decision are we still taking in someone else’s place?

Your notes

Only you read them.
