Read outside your lane

The starting point

You know your part of the work well. You see less of what happens before and after, especially when the file changes teams.

The move

“Can you show me what you get from me, and what you need to carry on?”

Why it works

Problems hide in handovers. Support starts a refund, finance reverses the charge, and nobody knows who is supposed to cut off access. Each team does its part. The customer keeps access they no longer pay for.

Following one case with the person next door makes that gap visible in half an hour. You do not have to take over their work. You just need to know what they get from you and what they are missing.

Starting out or working alone, look at the person who will use your output. What they do just before and just after teaches you why an instruction that is clear to you gives them trouble. With experience, the same inquiry shows what has changed since last time.

Reading outside your lane also means learning the neighbouring trade’s vocabulary. The day you build something for them, you already know what they expect.

Try this

Ask someone whose work touches yours for thirty minutes. Follow one case together to the handover point. Note one thing received, one thing expected, and one gap.

Propose a change to the handover. Check the next one together: did the information arrive at the right moment?

To discuss

What information was missing in our last handover?

Your notes

Only you read them.
