What that produces
Progress that rests mostly on free evenings can widen gaps in access. Commutes, family responsibilities, a second job, the connection or the electricity all change what a person can do after their day.
Learning also happens during work: a review that is explained, an inquiry run by two people, a new task with support alongside can all build a skill. Making that visible lets you back those occasions instead of automatically adding reading hours.
An announced slot stays fragile if the load is not adjusted. The team may need to cut a commitment, arrange cover, or fund a resource. Those trade-offs have a real cost. They are made with the people who can commit the time and the means.
The same format does not suit everyone. A beginner may need a demonstration and immediate feedback; an experienced person may want to compare several approaches. Ask what would help rather than imposing one uniform activity.
The decision
With one person or a small group, choose a piece of learning tied to a need, and a realistic slot inside working hours. Say what gets pushed back, what help is available, and what the first attempt will be.
At the end of the agreed period, look at whether the slot could be used and what it let people try or understand. If it disappeared, look for the trade-off that displaced it. If the activity did not help, adapt the support before extending the same format.
Someone with no authority over the schedule can prepare that request with their manager or an ally. They do not have to promise evenings to prove they are interested.
