The reflex
Requests arrive from sales, from the leadership, from users. Product work is mostly visible when they turn into well-written tickets.
The builder’s reflex
The product role helps choose which problems to take, explain the trade-offs, and check the results. The writing serves those decisions.
Why
Describing and organising the work is useful. Without it, decisions stay hard to put into practice. But how well a request is written does not yet say whether it deserves to go before another. Making the call means connecting the needs observed, the goals, the constraints, and the capacity available. Depending on the context, you can accept, shrink, defer or refuse a request. Refusing is an option, not proof of courage, and not the whole worth of the product role.
That judgement is built with other crafts. Support spots recurring difficulties, sales knows about a commitment, operations sees the load coming. The delivery team can propose a smaller solution. No one perspective replaces all the others.
To make those calls, you need a clear mandate. Someone with no right to change the roadmap can prepare options and ask for a decision; you cannot judge their autonomy by the number of requests they refused.
This practice also exists with no product role at all. In a community project, deciding which difficulty to take on with the time available is the same work. An experienced person can help make the criteria explicit; someone starting out can bring a case the group had not seen.
Try this
Keep a short record of the calls: request, need, decision, reason, owner, and the condition for revisiting. Avoid copying sensitive information into it unnecessarily.
Start with a recent decision, then share it with the people concerned. On the agreed date, check whether the need, the constraints or the results justify holding to it. There is no need to reopen a refusal just to look open-minded.
From where you sit
- Product: make the criteria visible, including for a request you accepted.
- Engineering: propose a smaller option and explain what it makes possible.
- Management: say which decisions the team can make and which have to be escalated.
- Customer relations: separate the need observed from the commitment already made.
To discuss
Which recent call can we explain, and what information could change it?
