Done on your side does not mean solved

The symptom

Your part is finished and passed on. It is still unclear whether the next person has the information, the time, or the agreement needed to pick it up.

The signal

Separate work finished, handover accepted, and result verified. Those three moments can belong to different people.

What’s going on

A handover lets work be shared out and a commitment be closed. It can be complete even when the final result is not yet known, provided what follows is genuinely organised. Saying “my part is done” is not an alibi when you know what was handed over and who is picking it up.

You prepare the invitations for a community workshop. Someone else is to send them. The text is ready, but they do not have access to the approved list of recipients. Checking that before the handover lets you deal with the blockage without automatically inheriting the sending and the whole follow-up for the event.

An acknowledgement is not always an acceptance of the work. Make clear what is expected, what is missing, and the next check-in. A shared tool can be enough if its rules are understood. For a more sensitive file, an explicit confirmation may be necessary. Handover time depends on the context, not on a standard few minutes.

The person receiving it may lack capacity, or may not have the right mandate. In that case, get the handover ruled on rather than chasing indefinitely or quietly picking the task back up. A responsibility does not transfer by writing someone’s name down without their agreement. Plan how what follows will be organised if someone is away.

Check this

For your next handover, say:

What is finished and the known limits: …
What the next step needs, and who accepts it: …
When to flag a handover problem, and to whom: …

Agree separately who will check the final result if that is needed. Once the handover is accepted, you can close your commitment according to that agreement.

At the next agreed check-in, look at whether the information passed on was enough. Improve the handover rather than adding permanent follow-up to everyone’s load.

To discuss

On a recent handover, what was accepted, and who now answers for what follows?
