Being the reference 2 min System Scope: agreement from the contributors and whoever owns communications or means

⇄ Your team works under your name

What you are asking for

You ask your team for initiative, for ownership, for work they can be proud of. When that work leaves the team, to the steering committee, to the client, onto a stage, you are the one presenting it. You say “we”. The names stay in the commit history.

What the system hears

The work counts here. The name attached to it is yours. Whoever built it learns that they exist inside the team and nowhere else.

What that produces

The reason rarely said out loud fits in one sentence: if I show them, someone takes them. It sounds careful. But people leave over pay, load, a relationship, an opening, and a name on a slide does not decide a departure on its own. Keeping someone invisible to keep them is paying for their loyalty with their career.

A collective voice can have good reasons: a brand, a client, a confidential subject. The problem is not “we”. It is “we” by default, that nobody chose.

A team prepares a presentation of a joint project. Two people want to speak, a third prefers a collective mention. They agree together on what can be shown and who gets named. The third is credited for her work. She does not have to go on stage to get the same backing.

Credit, speaking and career are three separate conversations. A public byline does not replace a talk about the role. If you don’t decide on means, you can still name people in your own presentations, and offer a review or an introduction, without promising an audience in return.

The decision

On the next piece of work that leaves your team, ask each contributor how they want to be credited and whether they want to speak. Check what can circulate and how much time it takes.

Settle the credits before the presentation, not after. Credit the work that stays internal too. Declining exposure is not a lack of ambition.

Afterwards, ask what it brought, what it cost, and whether each person would do it again. Handle questions of role and progression separately.

From where you sit

To discuss

On the last piece of work we showed outside, whose names went out, and who decided?
